When I was playing with Ronnie Hawkins, guitar players would come from all around to hear this kind of guitar playing. By the time we finished playing the [1965–66] tour with Bob Dylan, lots of guys had come along, like Eric and Jimi Hendrix, and that kind of guitar playing was becoming quite common.

The Coen Bros. are working on a script that’s loosely based on the life of Dave van Ronk, said a source who was briefed on the project but who declined to be identified because he was not authorized to speak on the filmmakers’ behalf. When I put it to him that Bob Dylan reputedly once castigated The Beatles most celebrated album for being over-produced, Don is vocal in the group’s defence.

“I like production. I think Bob’s records sound a little bit similar, when you get to that bluesy thing.

Experience Hendrix LLC and Legacy Recordings will release four new titles from guitar legend Jimi Hendrix, which will be available everywhere Tuesday, September 13. With a box set of ‘Winterland’ being among them, a live version of the Bob Dylan composition “Like A Rolling Stone,” its featured track from that album, which will precede Winterland’s release, as a CD and 7″ vinyl single, coming out Tuesday, August 23 in the States (international release date: August 22).

One of the songs that is most redolent of cotton fields or plantations or prison camps is the traditional ‘Ain’t No More Cane’, which you covered early before The Band’s first album. Levon said that when you recorded that song, that’s when The Band found its voice. Firstly, what are your recollections of doing that song, and secondly, is it because of the song’s nostalgic roots that The Band were able to capture it so perfectly?

Well, I have a different recollection of that song. That comes from when we were doing ‘The Basement Tapes’, so there was new songs, and Bob Dylan knows all of this stuff about folk music that we didn’t know. So every once in a while he would pull out one of these songs that we’d never heard of or heard before, and a couple of them that stuck out to me were ‘Spanish Is The Loving Tongue’ and ‘Ain’t No More Cane On The Brazos’. And when he sang that song, ‘Ain’t No More Cane On The Brazos’, I said, ‘Wait a minute, teach that song to me. There’s something special in that.’
